For a little back story, check out this link: Measures would target abuse of painkillers in Indiana
(I have adult ADHD, lets not debate that topic here...k?..good.)
The short story:
I went to my doctor today for my regular check up because they are required to see me ever 3-4 months in order to maintain my adderall XR presciption. I have to pay my $30 co-pay each time and my insurance company has to pay the remaining $80-90. Even though the perfect balance of medication was figured out for me over 3 years ago.
I have never abused my medication in any way. I actually take days off of my meds, per doctor's suggestion, whenever I know I am not going to be subjected to a high anxiety situation (fyi: adult ADHD often causes anxiety instead, or in addition to, hyperactivity).
My doctor is the professional. He went to medical school. He passed the state boards (which I hear is a nightmare of an exam). He has a private practice of many years.
However, Indiana state lawmakers think that I should be subjected to an annual drug test because there are people out there that abuse their medications.
The main push for this is over abuse of pain killers, but it affects all scheduled drugs. And who is going to pay for this? Well, I'll pay my co-pay and my insurance company will pay the rest (which as you all know means that everybody that pays into my insurance company are going to be responsible for that bill). I have to pay to prove my innocence.
I have a completely clean record. Not even a sealed adolescent DD charge. Nothing.
However, because the lawmakers in Indiana believe they know best so they legislate with their super-majority whatever they want. They know better than teachers and now even better than doctors.
Hell, I knew democrats love to over-regulate (and I typically vote democrat), but when is the public going to recognize that this regulation frenzy is not limited by party affiliation.
Indiana is as republican as it gets and they are doing everything except "stop and frisk" to make sure that I am not a criminal.
